How do I measure for a shower screen?

Measure the finished opening at three heights and three depths, always use the smallest figure, and check the walls for plumb before ordering — screens are adjusted to fit within a small tolerance, not made to a single number.

Measure at the right time

If the screen must be ordered before tiling — often the case on a fixed programme — order to the tiled dimensions your tiler confirms in writing, and allow the adjustment range below.

How to measure

  1. 1Measure the width at three heights: at the hob or floor, at about 1000mm, and near the top of where the screen will sit.Walls are rarely parallel. Three measurements reveal it; one hides it.
  2. 2Measure the return (depth) the same way, at three heights.
  3. 3Write down the smallest figure in each direction. The screen has to pass through the narrowest point. Ordering to the largest measurement is the most common and most expensive mistake.
  4. 4Measure the height from the hob or floor to where the screen finishes.Standard screens are around 1950–2000mm. Note any bulkhead, sloped ceiling or shelf that intrudes.
  5. 5Note the waste position and which way you want the door to open.

Check the walls are plumb and the floor is level

Hold a long spirit level against each wall the screen meets. A wall out by more than about 10mm over the screen height needs either packing or a screen with a wall channel, and you should tell us before ordering.

  • Semi-frameless screens adjust within a wall channel — typically 10–20mm of forgiveness.
  • Frameless screens have very little adjustment and demand near-plumb walls.
  • Hobs must be level along their length; a fall of more than a few millimetres shows as a visible gap under the glass.

Send it to us before ordering

Custom and cut-to-size screens cannot be returned for change of mind or for an incorrect measurement, so we would much rather check the numbers first. Send your measurements with a photo of the space and we will confirm the size and configuration.
